The comedy series has been firmly on the bubble for the past few months, but we now know the series is returning, but there's a catch.
New Girl Season 7 will serve as the show's swan song.
Yes, New Girl is officially coming to an end, you guys! An episode order is yet to be determined, but there is word the farewell season will span eight episodes.
New Girl Season 6 concluded with Jess and Nick rekindling their romance while dropping the bomb on viewers that Cece and Schmidt were expecting their first child together.
It definitely felt like the powers that be knew the show was on the bubble, so they closed it off in the best way they could. Thankfully for fans, they will have a farewell season to say goodbye to the characters.
New Girl was a huge hit for Fox when it first debuted, with Season 1 averaging 6.5 million viewers and a 3.2 rating among adults 18-49.
Ratings slipped for subsequent seasons, with Season 6 averaging 2.1 million viewers and a 0.9 rating. The show still gets a bump in delayed viewing.
New Girl was Fox's thirteenth highest rated series, so it's understandable that the show's fate was up in the air.
There's also no indication about when the series will return. Fox could hold it for midseason, but we'll get confirmation in the coming days.

Fox unveiled its 2017 fall schedule this morning, and we're a little puzzled by some of the changes.
Lucifer and Gotham are officially parting ways, with Lucifer moving into Gotham's old Monday night time slot, while Gotham is heading over to Thursdays.
Lucifer will lead into The Gifted, which looks like a decent show. However, wouldn't it have made more sense to have The Gifted at 8/7c?
Then, it could have helped boost Lucifer if it became a hit. With Empire fading, Fox desperately needs a new hit, so maybe The Gifted got the 9/8c treatment because they thought it would be higher rated there.
Maybe Lucifer can take advantage of pre-tune in for The Gifted, similar to the way every show that has aired before Empire has over the last few years.
Speaking of Empire, that show is also on the move. With ratings down double digits, Fox has opted to move the Lyon family one hour earlier, with Star taking Empire's slot.
Star was a reliable performer earlier this year, so this move was kind of a no-brainer. Will this pave the way for more crossover opportunities between the two series?
We sure hope so.
Lethal Weapon is losing its plum pre-Empire slot and is moving one night earlier to where Prison Break currently resides. Will it be able to perform well enough?
Other new drama series, The Orville will debut out of Gotham on Thursdays. On the new comedy front, Ghosted is launching on Sunday nights, while LA to Vegas is being held for midseason.
New Girl's seventh and final season will debut at midseason.

Fox is not ready to say goodbye to the X-Men universe quite yet.
The network has confirmed that The Gifted will return for Season 2!
The news comes just days after the series posted new lows after the network opted to air the show on New Year's Day.
Fox confirmed the renewal at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.
The Gifted Season 1 is averaging 3.3 million viewers and a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49, but the network claims the show surges 146 percent in delayed viewing to 8.3 million viewers.
It sure looks like the network is continuing to focus on other metrics when renewing the lower performing series.
At least fans will not be left hanging when The Gifted Season 1 comes to a close on January 15.
In addition to the exciting news for The Gifted, the network also confirmed when fans could expect New Girl to return to the air for its final season.
The eight-episode swan song will bow Tuesday, April 10 at 9:30/8:30c on the network before signing off for good with a one-hour series finale on May 15.
New Girl Season 7 will find the characters in a very different place to where they were when New Girl Season 6 ended.
In fact, the show has a four-year time jump on the cards and it means we will get to see some very different storylines.
Aside from those two stories, Fox president, Michael Thorn confirmed to reporters that more Prison Break is in development.
Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman later revealed that the new season “would not [feature] an entirely new cast,” adding that creator Paul Scheuring “had an idea for another season. He came in and pitched it. But it’s super early. We haven’t seen any written materials yet.”
So, Dominic Purcell was for real when he shared the following on Instagram a few weeks ago.
Do we really need another season featuring one of the characters stuck behind bars?
Let's hope there is some creativity in terms of refreshing the show because we're not so sure people would tune if it was a rehash of an old plot.

The Neighborhood has been ordered to series at CBS, but there's a big change coming to the comedy before it even hits the air.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the New Girl veteran has been added to the cast and will replace House of Lies alum, Josh Lawson.
The series follows “the nicest guy in the Midwest” who uproots his family and moves to a neighborhood in L.A. that is not one of the most desirable ones.
Greenfield will play Dave Johnson on the series which is expected to land on the fall schedule at CBS.
Cedric the Entertainer also stars on the series as Dave's next door neighbor, who clashes with Dave on some occasions due to their differing opinions.
