New Girl Season 6 Episode 1 Review: House Hunt

Three might be company but five (plus a marriage) is finally enough to make our friends move out of the loft.

On New Girl Season 6 Episode 1, we finally get to see that change. The roommates are growing up and moving on. But the friendships, of course, are never going away.

I'm so happy to see Cece and Schmidt leaving the apartment. Not just moving down the hall but actually buying a home. I think that really brings some sense to a show that sometimes doesn't make any.

Nick Returns - New Girl

In this first episode, I think you really see the growth of all the characters. Each one has embarked on a new journey or relationship.

Winston and Aly are going strong, and I like them as a couple. I hope they don't have her away at FBI training for long.

Our poor Jess is still pining over Nick Miller. Funny to see her going through different activities just to stop thinking about him. I especially loved seeing her find strength from working out.

Nick comes back and might I say he's looking fine. He lost some weight and is looking clean. Reagan thankfully is in Seattle on work, which I'm fine with.

You know what they call Seattle in Portland? North Portland. Or Vancouver's shoe.

Jess

New Orleans seemed to agree with him. But of course, he can't stay with Reagan. We all know he is meant to be with Jess.

In this love story, I hope Nick comes to the decision he loves Jess. I don't want Reagan breaking his heart.

I really hope this isn't a season-long unrequited love story. But with this being season 6, I don't think it can go on forever. Does New Girl even have that long?

It was so sweet seeing Nick write a book. I swooned when I saw he dedicated the book to Jess. Further reason as to why they're soul mates.

Jess coming clean to Winston and Schmidt was necessary. Winston helping Jess talk to Nick was so touching. I'm sure one of them will spill the beans to Nick.

DeeDee? That's not a name.

Nick

The bank scene was hilarious. I loved how through the house hunting scenes you could see the growth of Cece and Schmidt.

Instead of them taking out a loan for a dream home they can't afford, they decided to play it smart. By them buying the horrible fixer upper, I think it keeps them in the loft at least for half of the season.

On paper we're as ugly as Winston's belly button ring.

Schmidt

The roommates fixing up the house is sure to bring a lot of hilarious scenes. I just hope Winston doesn't start planning any pranks.

My favorite part of the episode is seeing Jess deal with her feelings for Nick. Its different from the first time she discovered having feelings for him. This time, she knows this is it, she loves him, and he is it for her. It feels so grown up.

"House Hunt" was a great way to kick off the season. Our favorite roommates all seem to be stable and in a good place. But I doubt that will last for long.

I do miss Coach, and I hope to see him making some appearances.

What did you think of the premiere episode? How long do you think it will take for Nick and Jess to get together? How many things are going to go wrong with the fixer upper? Will Winston and Aly last? Hit the comments below to let us know!

Did Jess manage to keep her mind off Nick?

That was her plan on New Girl Season 6 Episode 1 when Nick returned early from his summer in New Orleans.

Meanwhile on this addictive Fox comedy series, Cece and Schmidt's quest to buy their own house came with a whole lot of drama.

Also, Winston's long-distance relationship with Aly proved to be a little too much to keep up with.

On New Girl Season 6 Episode 2 Jess and Cece get the word out about voting for Hillary Clinton.

Meanwhile, Winston and Nick work on video sex for there long distance relationships.

Jess and CeCe Rustle Up Voters - New Girl

It's so good seeing Jess and Cece's friendship during this episode. Some of the best moments are when they get to have some bonding time.

Jess and Cece going to the sorority house was hilarious. Having the sorority girls give fake names were some of the best lines.

I especially loved when Cece and Jess got the girls on board to register to vote, but soon realized the girls wanted to vote for Trump. That left them no option but to run away from the pack. Is that even allowed on Fox? I guess so.

Winston and Nick realizing they are both in a long distance relationship put them together for this episode.

You're a real sandwich lady and I wanna scream your name across the ocean.

Nick

Winston's video sex closet was something to admire and laugh at. He goes all out by even having backgrounds of different countries when he chats with Aly. I just hope Ferguson doesn't get in the way!

Nick, of course, fails at video sex with Winston's props and accidently shows Aly his junk. I would love to see a longer version of Nick's phone sex call using his greeting cards lines.

Schmidt, of course, is having a nervous breakdown with the disorganized mail in the loft. I honestly think if they were going with an election themed episode, Schmidt could have had more to say on the subject.

Paul Ryan 2020.

Schmidt

Unfortunately he was used merely as a Republican who wants to vote Paul Ryan in 2020. I know the show is a comedy, but I thought his character could have brought more to the table, instead of just organizing the loft mail and election center.

The show needs to quickly bring Aly or Reagan back into the mix.

Showing Nick and Winston going through a long distance relationship was okay, but we need to see them together to bring in more laughs.

This episode was just okay for me. I know they wanted an election episode, especially because today is about registering to vote, but to me it fell flat.

The best part was the end when Jess was impersonating Donald Trump. She was spot on, I might say. Though the sorority scene was funny, I just felt like the episode was missing something.

Melanie Farts, signed five times.

Jess

Cece not wanting to finish college isn't a surprise to me. When they showed her in class during a past season she seemed very bored.

The characters didn't move forward in anyway. They didn't talk about the new house or any of the issues discussed during New Girl Season 6 Episode 1.

Maybe they should have saved the election centric theme for closer to voting time.

I think New Girl is at it's best when the group is together tackling some sort of issue. This felt very separated. Poor Schmidt was basically by himself.

How did you feel about "Hubbedy Bubby"? Did it fall flat or keep you entertained? Are you ready for Aly or Reagan to come back into the mix? What, if anything, was missing for you?

How did the gang feel about the election coverage?

That was addressed in a big way on New Girl Season 6 Episode 2 when Jess and Cece put on a bet with Schmidt that they could rustle up more voters for the Presidential Election.

Meanwhile on this hilarious Fox comedy, Winston schooled Nick on how to go about modern phone sex, but how many awkward situations did it get them into.

New Girl Season 6 Episode 3 Review: Is it starting to feel like Old Girl?

While the roommates go glamping, Nick discovers he is a talented writer.

On New Girl Season 6 Episode 3, the gang's all together and able to bring back the laughs.

Going Glamping - New Girl

Aly is also back and Winston could not be happier. Watching them together makes me so happy for Winston.

Winston has been through some crazy relationships. Remember how he met Ferguson? I hope we see this relationship develop into something deeper.

Out of all the roommates, Winston deserves his happy ending. After playing a third, sometimes fourth string character during the series, it's nice to see him winning.

I'm about to take Aly to Mount Smushmore.

Winston

Can we talk about Jess' "singles" club? Everything about this club was hilarious. Robbie and Principal Foster coming back was a major plus.

Schmidt's love for Nick is sometimes weird, but tonight was all about their friendship. I like how Schmidt pushed Nick into seeing he is a talented writer. Nick hearing that compliment from Schmidt finally made him believe in himself.

Nick is finally being the man everyone always saw, including me!

I cannot accept this Robbie and Jess relationship. I know Jess can't be alone, because let's be honest, she is the most comical in relationships. Yes they're cute in a 'we can sing by the campfire way,' but Robbie is too weird to be with Jess.

Emotionally they may not be available, but socially they are.

Jess

I hope this relationship is just a time filler for when Nick and Jess get back together.

Every character to me is starting to get lined up for an inevitable ending to New Girl. They each are either in a relationship or down the right path. Jess' character, of course, is not yet fully formed.

I think Jess will be the last to get her happy ending. Of course, we don't know if that ending is Nick, but my money is on it.

Though this episode was funny with the singles club scenario, Nick's meltdown and Schmidt's antics, it still feels like this series is missing something.

I feel that the jokes were there tonight, but the story development was not. The show is giving us much of the same but without any depth.

I'm single and sufficient.

Jess

What I would like to see is...Cece and Schmidt starting their next chapter in life and finally fixing up the house, and Jess back at work and building her life after Nick.

Why is it always Africa? They have a deep catalogue.

Principal Foster

How are you feeling about the season so far? Does this feel like the beginning of the end? Will Schmidt and Cece ever move out? Are you over Reagan? How cute are Aly and Winston?

New York, New York!

On New Girl Season 6 Episode 4, Schmidt is being honored by his high school, and the whole gang flies out to New York to celebrate.

Meeting With the 99th - New Girl

This installment was enjoyable and hilarious. Placing the roommates in a different city brought out new laughs and situations.

Schmidt being back home meant some extra smothering behavior in his mom. And the confrontation between Cece and Louise is every new wife's nightmare.

Fairfax and La Brea.

Cece

Cece finally receives respect from Louise, but of course she had to threaten to fight anyone who harms Schmidt to get it. Eh, who cares?

The chemistry between Winston and Nick is incredible. My favorite scene was when they spent all their money on a lavish lunch, just to end up broke.

Being from New York, I thought hearing them yell out, "Show time," was hysterical, because that's exactly what the street performers say.

Men of means.

Winston and Nick

The highlight of the show was supposed to be the crossover, but it fell flat to me. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast didn't add anything to the episode in any way. The crossover felt forced and unnecessary.

I enjoyed watching the roommates explore New York by themselves, without Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The cast members – Braugher, Samburg and Trugilo – seemed simply placed in the episode, but had no real trajectory.

The only way a crossover works is when a real story brings them together. The only similarity with the New Girl/Brooklyn Nine-Nine attempt is that both shows took place in New York.

If Fox joined the two shows to boost ratings, I don't think they'll have much success.

We finally discover why Jess found her boyfriend cheating on New Girl Season 1 Episode 1. A disastrous New York visit was cut short. This full circle moment felt exceedingly rewarding as a fan.

The deli encounter was another favorite because it's such a "New York moment." Jess treading lightly around the deli trying not to get confrontational, but then quickly turning full-on New Yorker, was outstandingly funny.

That's for sucker MCs, and west coast punks.

Jess

"Homecoming" brought the roommates back together in a way we haven't seen on New Girl Season 6. The greatest episodes are when they're all together in crisis mode.

What did you think of "Homecoming"? Did it feel like classic New Girl? Where you disappointed Coach wasn't in the entire episode?

Did you enjoy the crossover, or did it fall flat? What was your favorite scene?

Fox has a lot of difficult decisions to make as the network has a lot of marginally performing shows.

Only two of Fox's shows are up in the ratings vs. the 2015-2016 season, and the ones that are down, are down a lot.

Rosewood collapsed in its move to Thursday nights and that did nothing to help Pitch.

Scream Queens is getting quieter by the week.

It's worth noting, when considering these figures, that Fox is currently averaging a 1.33 rating among adults 18-49 with original programming.

If you want to see how the other networks are stacking up, we have separate posts for The CW, ABC, NBC and CBS.

Note: 24: Legacy, APB, The Mick, Kicking and Screaming, Prison Break, Shots Fired, Star, Sleepy Hollow and Making History are on tap for mid-season.

1. Empire - Certain Renewal

Empire certain renewal
Empire is down almost 20 percent in Season 3, but it is still the number one show on Fox by a long way. Season 3 is averaging 9.8 million viewers and a 3.7 rating among adults 18-49. The show catapults double digits in delayed viewing, so it will be on the air for another few years.

2. The Simpsons - Certain Renewal

The simpsons certain renewal
Thanks to multiple NFL overruns, The Simpsons is up almost 20 percent to 4.7 million viewers and a 2.0 rating. This one is not going anywhere.

3. Lethal Weapon - Certain Renewal

Lethal weapon certain renewal
Lethal Weapon has been a surprising success for Fox. It is averaging 7.1 million viewers and a 1.9 rating. It held up well airing without Empire, so it can hold its own.

4. Son of Zorn - Could Go Either Way

Son of zorn could go either way
Son of Zorn is currently the fourth highest rated show on Fox, but we'll need some more data before moving it to "Likely Renewal." It is averaging 3.7 million viewers and a 1.5 rating. The show has lost a lot of steam in recent weeks.

5. Family Guy - Certain Renewal

Family guy certain renewal
Family Guy has been rock solid this year for Fox. It is currently averaging 3.1 million viewers and a 1.5 rating. The show gets a decent bump in delayed viewing.

6. Bob's Burgers - Renewed

Bob's Burgers is already renewed for Season 8. Season 7 is averaging 2.8 million viewers and a 1.3 rating.

17 Thanksgiving Dinners That Definitely Weren't Ours

Thanksgiving is almost here and we can't think of a better way to celebrate than to reminisce about some of our favorite Thanksgiving dinners!

Some were bad, some were good; others were good because they were so bad. All of them cemented themselves in television history as staples for Thanksgiving viewing.

From the awkward to the over-the-top, here are some of our favorite memorable Thanksgiving meals!

1. You Just Got Slapped, How I Met Your Mother

You just got slapped how i met your mother
On, "Slapsgiving," the countdown was on for Barney to receive one of the five slaps he had earned after losing a bet about whether or not Robin was in a porn movie. (She was just a Canadian pop-star!) Throughout dinner, Barney panics about Marshall’s every movie, waiting for the slap. Meanwhile Robin, who has just broken up with Ted, has brought a date to Thanksgiving dinner and he’s just a little older, but Ted sees him as an old man throughout the evening. After Barney finally receives his slap, Marshall leads the gang in the lovely tune, “You Just Got Slapped.” Everybody saw it, and everybody laughed and clapped.

2. She Gives Good Parent, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Thanksgiving dinner crazy ex girlfriend
On "My First Thanksgiving with Josh!," Rebecca is invited to the big Filipino feast, and she’s determined to give “good parent” to Josh’s parents and make them love her more than they love his current girlfriend, Valencia. Filipino food doesn’t agree with Rebecca and she lands herself in the bathroom, where she has to decide between pooping or listening to Josh have sex with Valencia. Maybe she should have just flown to New York and watched the dog show with her mother.

3. A Braverman Family Thanksgiving, Parenthood

A braverman family thanksgiving parenthood
Wouldn’t we all want to spend Thanksgiving with the Braverman clan? On "Happy Thanksgiving," Adam is stressed out, Julia just wants to make a good pie, Sarah just had a big fight with her boss/boyfriend, and Crosby is desperately trying to impress his girlfriend’s mom. After an awkward prayer at the dinner table, dinner goes off without a hitch, and the Braverman kids find themselves dancing in the kitchen, once again, making us all wish our families were this functional.

4. Jack Tells His Mom He's Gay, Will & Grace

Jack tells his mom hes gay will and grace
It’s hard to believe, but Jack STILL hasn’t told his family that he’s gay! On "Homo for the Holidays," when Jack discovers that his mother is coming for Thanksgiving, he asks his friends to help him with his straight charade. Will, Grace, and Karen all think that he needs to come clean about his sexuality. It turns out that Jack’s mother has a secret of her own to share at dinner…Jack’s father isn’t who he thinks he is!

5. Hanksgiving, New Girl

Hanksgiving new girl
Jess really likes Paul, so she invites him to spend Thanksgiving with the gang on, "Thanksgiving." She gets the last turkey in America, names it Hank, and then realizes that she has no idea how to cook a turkey. She enlists Schmidt’s help in making Thanksgiving a little more sexy, but the gang ends up smoked out of their apartment. It’s no problem though, because Jess has a key to the neighbor’s apartment. They prepare the feast there and are ready to have a great meal together…until Paul finds their neighbor dead in the bathroom. This goes down as not only the most memorable dinner on New Girl, but also as one of the best installments the series has ever had.

6. Food Fight at Carla's, Cheers

Food fight at carlas cheers
When Diane discovers that many members of the Cheers family don’t have plans for Thanksgiving, she suggests that they all spend the holiday having dinner at Carla’s new home on, "Thanksgiving Orphans." The gang agrees, and plans to have the best Thanksgiving ever, complete with an appearance by Vera, Norm’s never-seen wife. Naturally, the dinner doesn’t quite go as planned, and a food fight ensues, and just as the audience is FINALLY about to get a good look at Vera, she takes a pie to the face.

Could Fox really say goodbye to Scream Queens, The Exorcist and Pitch?

All three are not performing well in the ratings. Scream Queens comes from Ryan Murphy, so he probably has a lot of pull with the network. However, it's hard to imagine the show returning with ratings continuing to dive.

Pitch started fairly low and the ratings have got worse by the week. Fox has a lot of mid-season shows on the roster and they could do better.

The Exorcist is slipping, but is performing fairly well when you consider it is surging with the DVR ratings factored in. The fate of the series will probably depend on how Sleepy Hollow and Rosewood perform on Friday nights come mid-season.

It's worth noting, when considering these figures, that Fox is currently averaging a 1.30 rating among adults 18-49 with original programming.
